Free Weights vs. Machines
People are always asking which is better, free weights or machines. Some think that machines are better for losing bodyfat, and free weights are better for putting on muscle. The truth of the matter is that there's advantages and disadvantages to both.
Some advantages of free weights are:
They allow for a more natural range of motion.
They force the body to use stabilizer muscles resulting in better balance and coordination.
Free weights are versatile----even a single set of dumbbells can be used for many exercises.
Some disadvantages of free weights are:
Some exercises, such as the bench press, can be dangerous if the lifter is alone.
Many beginning lifters don't have the balance, coordination, or proper form needed to control them.
Free weights, and that area of the gym, can be intimidating to some people.
Some advantages of machines are:
They allow for isolation of target muscles.
They are safer for performing exercises that otherwise might require a spotter.
They are easier for a beginner to learn proper form on.
They can allow for faster workouts.
Some disadvantages of machines are:
It's impossible for every machine to fit every body.
They don't force the body to use some of the stabilizer muscles.
Some machines don't follow a natural range of motion or simulate "real world" movements.
